Scenario-planning checklist
Use this checklist beside a calculator. Record your notes in your own document or print this page; the website does not collect them.
1. Write the question first
- What do I want to estimate: a payment, contribution, timeline, or future balance?
- Which date or time period matters?
- Which currency and units will I use consistently?
My question: __________________________________________________
2. Record the assumptions
- Starting amount, target or principal, and term.
- Rate type and period, including whether the tool asks for APY or an annual interest rate.
- Contribution or payment amount, frequency, and timing.
- Source and date for each assumption. Mark hypothetical values clearly.
My assumptions and sources: ____________________________________
Check the documented methods and exclusions before interpreting the result.
3. Compare one change at a time
Keep the initial scenario as a reference. Change one assumption and record both results. For example, keep the rate and timeline fixed while comparing two recurring contributions.
Reference scenario and result: __________________________________
Changed assumption and result: __________________________________
What explains the difference? ___________________________________
4. Record what the estimate leaves out
- Read the tool's limitations, including any exclusions for taxes, fees, inflation, or changing rates.
- Check timing and rounding before comparing against another tool or statement.
- Do not treat a hypothetical rate or projection as a guaranteed outcome.
Limitations and questions to check: ______________________________
5. Choose the tool for your question
- Savings goal calculator: estimate a recurring contribution or time to a goal.
- Compound interest calculator: project a balance and regular deposits.
- CD calculator: estimate maturity value from APY and term.
- Loan calculator: estimate payments and compare extra principal.
